Continuous Enrollment Policy

Once a student completes RES8001: Qualifying Research Seminar and all required research and content courses, he or she will come under the requirements of the Continuous Enrollment Policy. As the title suggests, students are required to remain continuously enrolled during this period.

QUALIFYING PAPER PHASE

RES8001 Doctoral Research Seminar and Prospectus………………………….3 credits
Once a student has successfully completed a minimum of 45 hours of coursework (and has fulfilled all other requirements outlined in the RES8001: Qualifying Research Seminar policy), they will be enrolled into this three credit hour course.

RES8111-RES8114 Continuous Development of Qualifying Paper.………0-12 credits

Upon completion of RES8001 and all required research, leadership, and concentration courses, if the student has not yet defended the Qualifying Paper, he or she will be registered for this three credit course in order to remain continuously enrolled throughout the Qualifying Paper process. Each three credit continuous development course will span an entire semester, or two-session period. Students will be enrolled into these continuous development courses in the fall and spring semesters for a total of six credits earned in a calendar year. This will continue until the successful defense of the Qualifying Paper, at which time the student will be registered for RES8221: Dissertation Proposal, Defense, IRB.

DISSERTATION PHASE

This will continue until the successful defense of the Proposal.

Upon successful defense of the Dissertation Proposal, he or she will be registered for this three credit course in order to remain continuously enrolled throughout the Dissertation completion process. Each three credit continuous development course will span an entire semester, or two-session period. Students will be enrolled into these continuous development courses in the fall and spring semesters for a total of six credits earned in a calendar year. This will continue until the successful defense of the Dissertation.

A student has a maximum of seven years (six years if enrolled prior to Fall 2019) from his or her start date with the program to successfully defend a Doctoral Dissertation.

CONSEQUENCES OF NON-ENROLLMENT

Students who do not enroll in a required session will be withdrawn from active status and not allowed to continue in the doctoral program until reinstated. A hold will be placed on the student’s university record preventing any further registration or access to university resources. The student’s committee chair and members will be notified and asked to temporarily cease all Qualifying Paper or Doctoral Dissertation-related interaction until reinstatement is approved. Non-enrollment does not delay a student’s six or seven year completion deadline.

A student wishing to be reinstated to the doctoral program and active status will need to petition the Program Director. If approved, the Director will allow the student to resume studies. Payment arrangements for any financial obligations must be made with the Business Office before the student will be permitted to continue and his or her corresponding committee notified to reengage the student.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Students who cannot continue in the program due to extenuating circumstances can request a leave of absence from their doctoral studies on a session-to-session basis for up to a maximum overall leave period of one year. While there are many situations upon which a leave can be requested, such as the birth or adoption of a child or a serious medical condition, a leave will not be granted with the sole reason of financial hardship. The initial request for a leave should be submitted by the student to the Program Director. Verification of circumstances should be included as part of the leave request. Any time spent on approved leave will not count toward the student’s six or seven year completion deadline.
